I tried to relax my nerves on the drive over to the club. We took two cars since I didn’t plan to

stay while he worked his half shift.

Driving in Vegas gave me pure anxiety. People here were much more aggressive than the

drivers back home. Brent weaved in and out of traffic in his Beamer like a mad man. It was a

bitch trying to keep up.

For a guy who worked at a club he sure drove a fancy car. We rounded the corner to Quad X,

Brent’s club. He walked over and took me by the hand leading me through the leather double

doors. A big hairy bulldog looking guy sat just inside the doors, he looked as if he hadn’t had a

bowel movement in years—poor guy.

“Justin, hook my boy up with whatever he wants,” Brent said, before disappearing behind a

curtain in the back.

I looked around a spotted a few patrons; the heavy bass music filled the entire space. It was

dark, but the green and blue lighting scheme was…interesting.

“First time in a strip club?”

“Strip club?”

He laughed as he served drinks to the guys in suits at the end of the bar. I spun around on the

stool and peeked around the corner to see poles lined against the wall and in the center. The

place was huge. It was as if I’d stepped into a big man cave. It was still early, sometime after

nine p.m. and folks were just beginning to pile in.

“What’s the drink, son?”

“Apple Martini me, please.”

He laughed as he mixed, “Be careful, son.”

“Huh?”

“Let me guess. You just moved to town from Mississippi. You wanted a change and you

moved here to start over. Am I right?”

“I’m from Alabama,” I said, matter-a-factly.

“Whatever, you watch yourself. Vegas will eat you alive, don’t lose yourself in the lights my

friend; I’ve seen it too many times. You’ll become something you never thought possible. Cute

accent by-the-way.”

His eyes filled with water as he wiped a falling tear from his cheek. His warning seemed

sincere. Hell, it scared the hell out of me. The nagging little voice in my head started up just as I

downed my first martini.

“Another, please, keep’em coming,” I said, placing a ten on the counter.
